Grand Opening: M Resort in Las Vegas
Written by Haylie | Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009
The M Resort, located 10 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip, just celebrated its grand opening this past weekend. The 390-room $1 billion property will employ 1,800 employees, who otherwise wouldn’t have a job in the declining Nevada economy. Democratic state representative, Dina Titus, doesn’t see just another hotel opening that may be harsh competition for already drowning hotels and casinos in the city, but rather a positive for the people of the community: “It’s not only a good indication that maybe things are turning around, the opening is a great morale boost for the community.”
Newly employed casino bartender, Manago, who has served casino drinks for nearly 15 years and has not been able to find steady work lately, says, “It feels good. Everybody is really happy and ready to get to work.”
So what makes the M different? Why will people visit the M in 2009 when all other casinos in Vegas were hurting throughout 2008? Alexis Shapiro, M Resort ambassador host, believes it’s all about the way you treat people. “Customer service is so important in these times,” Shapiro says. “That’s something we’re going to stress.”
The opening VIP party saw more than 4,000 attendees, who enjoyed free drinks, a fireworks show, and a fire and water show to celebrate the 18-month construction and almost five years of planning. A lot of important people in the Nevada gaming industry attended the party. Anthony Marnell, III, M Resort CEO remarks that “It makes me feel good that there are people who want to come see what we did.” And on the subject of slow business, Marnell is ready for the challenge. He says, “I’ve been waiting to see cars lined up (to get onto M Resort’s property) for a long time. We’re a new property and we don’t have one customer. We have marketing plans for March, April, and May to build our customer base from scratch.”
Senator John Ensign believes in the community, saying that this opening proves that Southern Nevada is willing to conquer the problems that the economy has brought. “There are too many smart people in this town, like the Marnells who know how to build something that is good for the community and the economy,” says Sen. Ensign.
After the ribbon cutting ceremony, Mayor of Henderson, Jim Gibson, said to Marnell, “This was a bold move in this economy, and it’s important because everything is all cloudy and gray.” Gibson believes that the M Resort will serve as a gateway at the southwest of the city since it is located at the intersection of Las Vegas Blvd. South and St. Rose Pkwy. Gibson also commented, “We’re happy to have M Resort in the city of Henderson and we’re happy to have them on the tax rolls.”
