New Study Shows Women Gambling at Work

Written by Haylie | Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

It’s common knowledge that the majority of gamblers we see on TV playing poker are men, but we see just as many women at land-based casinos playing slots, craps, roulette, etc. Men typically, though, have a reputation for playing poker in the basement of a friend or online. However, recently, a study initiated by eCOGRA has shown that 10% of women are actually gambling at the workplace.

It may seem ironic that women fought for equal rights to be treated as equal to men, and perhaps even more men gamble online at work, but society wouldn’t first suspect a woman to risk her job by engaging in such a seemingly immoral act. Many jobs that women hold today do involve them to sit in front of a computer screen, whether they hold a management job, a vice president position, CEO, or even secretary position, so it might be obvious that some of them would multi-task their day-to-day work with gambling at online casinos while on the clock. most of the jobs omen have these days, are sitting in front of a computer.

The study suggests that this may just be a way for women to occupy their time or perhaps there is an underlying issue. Are women using their role in society to take unnecessary risks in hopes that their gender will get them out of trouble should they get caught? Are they using their sexual status to bend the rules?

One theory as to why more women are gambling online these days is to relieve the pressures that come from work, kids, marriage, dating, etc. But the problem is that by using gambling as a stress outlet, specifically at work, may cause some mental disorders with their self-esteem.
Men typically release stress in ways that don’t involve risking their jobs; they go to a bar after work or have a beer when they get home. Going to a bar is not the safest option for women, as they become preyed upon by lurking drunks.

Since gambling is clearly an addiction for some, women need to find some other way to channel the stress they incur from their jobs and day-to-day life in general. Many companies now offer counseling to women (and men) who have wandered astray from dealing with stress in a healthy way, just like college campuses have now hired counselors to combat problem college gambling that is most of the time illegal due to age restrictions.
