Ohio To Vote on Las Vegas Casinos in Cleveland

While Las Vegas continues to battle the recession, Ohio voters will be deciding whether to permit Las Vegas style casinos within their major cities.Results from the vote will be announced on Tuesday.

Taxes generated from casino gambling continue to be a major source of revenue for a number of states excluding Hawaii and Utah. These funds help public services otherwise not funded by the government and while a large number of tax payers enjoy the benefits these funds assist there is a % of tax payers who oppose the idea of opening major casinos in Cincinnati and Cleveland.

Dan Gilbert, who owns the Cleveland Cavaliers is all for the opening of the Ohio casinos. IN fact he would become one of the owner/operators should Ohio vote yes to the Las Vegas style proposition.

“We’re talking about a major, first class Las Vegas-style situation,” says Gilbert. “Not a backroom poker joint under a race track.”

The problem with the casinos of course is the issues with gambling, and a % of the voters are opposed to the casinos for this very reason. Reverend Jon Edgar opposes the idea due to the problems associated with casinos such as addictions and crime even though the casinos would bring employment opportunities in a time when jobs are scarce.

This isn’t the first time Ohio has voted on building casinos. In fact, the issue has been put to vote a total of five times with all five times turning the idea down.

This time appears to be different though. With the current economy just coming out of recession, people need jobs and the government needs finances to continue to operate programs 100%. The casinos could give Ohio the funds and opportunity it needs to pull out of this recession a bit sooner than expected.
