Meadows Racetrack Rewards Voters with Free Slots Play

As if doing your civic duty wasn’t reward enough, some voters were given a little extra bonus on Tuesday. Voters who showed their voting stubs at Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Washington County, PA received $10 in free play. “I’d never heard of that … but they are not espousing a particular candidate in exchange for some valuable thing,” said Larry Spahr, director of elections in Washington County.

At the Mohegan Sun casino at Pocono Downs in Eastern Pennsylvania, voters were offered an Election Day prize drawing where three winners each hour had their choice between $500 in cash or $700 in free slots play.

Voter perks were seen across the country included free coffee, doughnuts and ice cream. Voters were promised a free small coffee from Starbucks, Ben and Jerry’s offered voters a free scoop and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts got in on the action by offering a special star shaped doughnut to voters.

Voting promotions are allowed in Pennsylvania as long as they don’t reward someone for voting a certain way said Leah Harris, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of State.

“I don’t know if anybody could construe that as paying someone to cast a ballot,” said Nils Frederiksen, a spokesman for Attorney General Tom Corbett.

It looks like a free cup of coffee or scoop of ice cream wont likely be raising any flags. That said, the attorney generals office encouraged voters to report any efforts to influence their votes, Frederiksen said.
