IGT Lays Off 300 Employees From Reno Facility

IGT, one of the world’s leaders in developing slot machines has also felt the recent pinch of the US economy with their recent announcement that nearly 300 employees at the IGT Reno division will be out of a job. The company has a total of 5400 employees across their entire network and off those they expect to see approximately 500 of them go. The 300 who work at the Reno headquarters make up only 0.05% of that divisions numbers.

An email was sent out by International Game Technology to all employees during late September, stating that they would have a choice between a layoff or a voluntary buyout package, and the number of employees who would be out of work would be based on who chose what package. The voluntary buyout was only made available to employees who were 55 years of age or older, to assist them until retirement.

Of the 300 employees on the list, 120 of them have taken the buyout while the remaining staff members have had their positions eliminated from the Reno facility.

“The voluntary separation offers and the current reduction in workforce are just one part of an overall strategic evaluation in reducing expenses for the entire company,” IGT spokesman Ed Rogich said Thursday. “This effort is in response to the current economic conditions that we are facing in our markets throughout the world.”

“Every job is precious and when we lose them, it is not a good day,” said Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, chairman of the Nevada Commission on Tourism. “Especially in high-tech manufacturing, those are very precious jobs.”
