Gambling and California

The governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been an open book on his stance on casino gambling. He believes in gambling as a great way to rebuild his state’s ailing economy, and tribal casinos in California are among the leading tribal casinos in the nation. However, Governor Schwarzenegger recently implemented a strategy to get higher return from the revenue generated by these casinos by withholding their gaming licenses, but his plan actually backfired.
The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled that the state not delay the licenses after the state appealed the decision made by a federal judge back in August that declared the state of California would in fact have to issue the gaming licenses to tribal casinos.
Legal analyst, Bob Brice, stated, “Even though the state will be forced to hand out the licenses, there is a strong possibility that tribes do not go after all of them. The economy is simply too rocky right now for any of these tribes to make a serious investment into expanded casino gambling.”
Brice also noted that the California tribal casino industry is already saturated. The state has the most tribal casinos in the nation, and the governor is moving forward on expansion. The economy has took a turn for the better in recent months, but is still not strong enough to support all casino operations.
Brice also mentioned that the tribal gaming industry within the state of California is already saturated, with California having the most tribal casinos in the nation. However, the governor is still looking toward more expansion as recently, the economy has started to improve. Brice doesn’t believe though, that it is well enough to sustain more casino operations.
In these economic times and the on-going emergence of online gambling, other states have seen many of their casinos shutting down, and in California, as well, many casino employees have been laid off in the wake of the recession. It has been suggested, though, that due to the lack of ability by the US federal government to make any real progress toward regulating online gambling, the future of online gambling may lay in the hands of the individual state governments, much like land-based gambling. Consequently, California legislature has tossed around the idea of legalizing online poker to relieve some of the tension that they have felt from the budget crisis that California is in the midst of.
